What does SPF mean, and which SPF should I choose?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how well a sunscreen shields skin from UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn. SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB; SPF 50+ filters about 98%. For everyday wear indoors or short exposure, SPF 30 is usually sufficient. For long periods outdoors, high-altitude areas, water, or if you have fair or sensitive skin, choose SPF 50+.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVB rays are shorter and stronger at the skin's surface — they cause sunburn and are what the SPF number measures. UVA rays are longer, penetrate more deeply, and remain fairly constant through the year and through cloud and glass. UVA drives premature ageing, loss of firmness and dark spots. A broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both, which is why the label matters as much as the number.
What is the difference between sunscreen, sunblock and sun cream?
In everyday use the three terms describe the same thing. Historically "sunblock" referred to mineral formulas that sat on the skin and physically reflected UV, while "sunscreen" described chemical filters that absorb it. Most modern formulas, including ours, combine both approaches, so the practical difference has largely disappeared. What matters is the SPF, broad spectrum coverage, and whether you enjoy using it enough to apply it daily.
Which sunscreen format is best — cream, spray, oil or stick?
The best format is the one you will reapply. Creams give the most controlled, even coverage and suit the face. Sprays and mists cover the body quickly and are easiest on backs and shoulders. Oils add nourishment for dry skin. Sticks are ideal for precision on ears, noses and around the eyes, and for topping up over make-up without a mirror.
How much sunscreen should I apply to my body?
About 35ml — roughly six to seven teaspoons — covers an average adult body. A practical way to think about it is one teaspoon per limb, one for the front of the torso, one for the back, and one for the face and neck. Most people apply between a quarter and a half of this, which is the single most common reason sunscreen underperforms.
Should I use a different sunscreen on my face and my body?
Ideally, yes. Facial skin is thinner, more prone to congestion and more often covered by make-up, so face formulas are lighter, non-greasy and designed not to clog pores or disturb foundation. Body sunscreens are richer and built for fast coverage over large areas. Using a body formula on the face is unlikely to harm you, but it is more likely to feel heavy and be skipped.
Does sunscreen help prevent dark spots and hyperpigmentation?
Yes, and it is the most important step. UV exposure triggers melanin production, which is what makes existing dark spots darker and new ones appear. Sunscreen will not remove pigmentation that is already there, but without daily broad spectrum protection, any brightening treatment you use is working against a tide. Consistent SPF is what allows brightening skincare to show results.
Does sunscreen protect against pollution?
Most sunscreens are formulated against UV alone and offer little defence against airborne pollutants.
